Favours / Bomboniere

Favours / bonboniere are traditionally presented to all guest at a christening. Almonds in uneven numbers of three, five. seven, nine are given as tokens of health, fortune and happiness.

The gift of sugared almonds is a tradition for over 3.000 years
In old Greece, Europe, Italy, France and in the Middle East. Every one loves to receive a gift, plus most people love sweets so this is the idea of Favours/Bonboniere.

Favours are used at Chistenings / Baptisms, Communion, Wedding and Anniversaries and many other occasions to decorate tables and add a little sparkle.

The custom for a Wedding is to present to each guest a Favour/Bonboniere with FIVE almonds. The number Five represents five wedding wishes:

HEALTH,
WEALTH,
HAPPINESS,
FERTILITY and LONG LIFE.

* According to a beautiful fable in Greece mythology, a young man called Demophon (Theseu's son) fell in love with a lovely Tracian princess, Phyllis. Before the marriage ceremony Demophon is informed that his father has died in Athens and he must return for the funeral. He promised to come back by a certain day but cannot return until three months later. By this time Phyllis is sure that she will never see her lover again and eventually she died of a broken heart. The Gods were touched by her love and transformed her into an almond tree. When the desperate Demophon returned to find Phyllis turned into a flowerless tree, he embraced her, and the tree burst into bloom, proving his undying love .*
